Types of conditions
Prostate cancer is cancer that forms in the prostate. In men, the prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. Many prostate cancers grow slowly and remain confined to the prostate gland, where they may not cause serious damage.
An enlarged prostate means that the gland has become larger and happens to almost all men as they get older.
An enlarged prostate is usually called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is not cancer and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Kidney stones (renal lithiasis, nephrolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. They have many causes and can affect any part of the urinary tract, from the kidneys to the bladder.
Often, stones form when urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize, bond and adhere to each other forming a nucleus.
Types of surgeries
Robotic surgery, or robot-assisted surgery, allows physicians to perform many types of complex procedures with greater precision, flexibility and control compared to conventional techniques. Robotic surgery is generally associated with minimally invasive surgery (procedures performed through small incisions). In addition, it is sometimes used in certain traditional open surgical procedures.
The endourology surgery is performed using an instrument similar to a telescope (endoscope), which is coupled to a camera and endourological instruments, which enters the body through the ducts and natural cavities, such as the urethra, bladder, ureter and kidney, without making incisions.
This endoscopic procedure allows treating the patient’s problem on an outpatient basis, whether male or female, regardless of age or weight, without significant bleeding. An open surgery can be avoided and finally presenting an excellent evolution and a prompt return to work.
This technique allows the extraction or fragmentation of kidney stones and surgeons can also determine what causes them and help prevent them from forming again.
A laparoscopy is a procedure used by a doctor to look inside the abdomen (belly) and pelvis. It is done with a laparoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a light and a small video camera on one end. The tube is inserted through an incision made through the abdominal wall, near the navel. A second or third incision may also be made in other parts of the abdomen to insert other instruments.
WHAT IS HoLEP?
In HoLEP, surgery is performed through the urethra. The surgeon looks for the boundary between the «shell» of the prostate and the «segments», cutting with the laser while coagulating the remaining surface, achieving a precision and absence of bleeding unattainable with other surgical techniques.
